Slugging: Is It Right for Your Skin?
Our Tips to Successful Slugging
Winter is here, and with it comes the challenge of keeping skin hydrated against cold outside winds and dry indoor heat. One skincare method that is popular during winter is called "facial slugging", or just "slugging". This technique's purpose is to lock in moisture by applying an occlusive over your skincare routine. Today, were discussing how you you can adapt this practice using Skin Balm Apothecary’s products!
What Is Facial Slugging?
Facial slugging is traditionally a nighttime skincare step where you apply a layer of an occlusive product at the end of your routine. This layer acts as a barrier that helps to prevent water loss and even enhance the effectiveness of your serums or moisturizers underneath. However, for acutely dry skin, like mine, it can be done during the day as well. As long as you're okay with more of that "dewey" look!
Slugging is like a protective shield that covers your face, protecting your skin from environmental stressors and water loss.
Why It Works
Slugging is particularly beneficial during winter because it targets issues like:
-
Dry, flaky skin caused by cold weather.
-
A weakened skin barrier.
-
The need for enhanced hydration.

Steps for Effective Slugging
Cleanse Gently:
Begin with a gentle, hydrating cleanser, like SBA’s Renew Cleansing Oil and/or Clarifying Cleanser (or Cleansing Duo for a discounted price), which removes impurities without stripping moisture.
Layering Is Key:
Apply hydrating serums, creams, and or/ moisturizers. Use any of SBA's serums and moisturizers for this step.
Seal with an Occlusive:
Finish with a generous application of SBA’s Glow Balm. You can also use the Baby & Mom Balm, but read more on the differences of these two products here before choosing which one to slug with.
AM & PM Care:
Allow the products to work overnight and during the day, whenever you choose to slug. I slug during the AM and PM depending on the season because my skin can become acutely dry in the winter months. Most people won't need to slug during the day though.
Morning Refresh:
Some may say to cleanse your face in the morning after slugging, however, I leave on whatever is left of my PM slugging routine (which is not much since I roll around all night)! Why wash off the goodness? Perhaps I may refresh my face with a little water and if there's a ton of balm left over I may wipe it off, but I simply apply my am skincare routine, and opt out of cleansing in the AM. My skin does best only cleansing once a day, at night. However, you may find that you need to cleanse twice a day! Click here to check out our winter skincare routine for your skin type!
Tailoring Slugging to Your Skin Type
-
Dry or Mature Skin Slugging can provide deep hydration and relief since as we age, we tend to lose moisture in our skin.
-
Acne-Prone or Combination Skin Slugging may not be best suited for this skin that is navigating acne, but you certainly can try "spot-slugging" by applying occlusives to dry or irritated areas ONLY.
-
Oily Skin If you have this skin type, you may need to try oil cleansing first, to train and balance your skin before you try slugging. Focus on balancing oil production before incorporating this technique.
Avoid Vaseline!
I know, Vaseline is often touted as a slugging go-to. Yikes. Vaseline, made from petroleum jelly and toxic mineral oils is criticized due to concerns about its primary ingredient, petrolatum (a main ingredient used to make gasoline, kerosene, and diesel).
Petrolatum has been found to contain harmful contaminants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are known carcinogens, and linked to various health risks. Additionally, its unnatural occlusive nature can create a barrier that actually traps dirt and bacteria, potentially leading to clogged pores and irritation, especially for acne-prone skin.
Instead, choose clean, skin-friendly alternatives like SBA’s occlusive options, which are formulated with natural ingredients to support your skin barrier and are low-comedogenic, designed even with acne-prone skin in mind.
How Often Should You Slug?
In short, slugging doesn’t need to be a nightly routine, or something you do year round. It's more of a tool, or technique, to help your skin during the dry, cold, harsh weather that winter brings. Depending on your skin type and goals, you can slug seasonally daily, weekly, or how ever often you need the extra support.
Supporting Winter Skin Holistically
In addition to slugging, maintaining healthy, moisturized skin in winter includes:
-
Staying hydrated.
-
Eating nutrient-rich foods that support skin health.
-
Using skincare products tailored to your skin type.
-
Protecting your skin barrier with gentle, effective products.
Remember, your best skin is supported by your overall lifestyle!
