Nilotica Butter* (Infused with Chamomile Flowers*, Calendula Flowers*), Mango Butter*, Olive Oil Herbal Infusion* (Lavender Flower*, St. John’s Wort*, Marshmellow Root*), Beeswax*
*Organic
Nilotica butter deeply hydrates and nourishes the skin due to its rich fatty acid and vitamin content, making it particularly beneficial for dry and aging skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties soothe conditions like eczema and dermatitis, while its antioxidants protect against environmental damage and premature aging. Gentle and non-comedogenic, Nilotica butter is suitable for all skin types (including sensitive skin) and helps to strengthen the skin's natural barrier, maintaining moisture and overall skin health.
Chamomile is extremely gentle and suitable for sensitive baby skin. It hydrates and moisturizes the skin, keeping it soft and supple. The natural moisturizing properties of chamomile prevent dryness and maintain the skin's natural moisture balance, which is essential for delicate baby skin.
Calendula is known to promote wound healing. It can accelerate the healing of cuts, scrapes, and minor burns. It can also stimulate collagen production and enhance tissue regeneration, making it a great ingredient for stretch marks and a growing belly!
Marshmallow Root can help reduce redness and swelling, providing relief from conditions that cause inflammation and irritation.
St. John’s Wort is known for its potent anti-inflammatory effects, which can help soothe irritated or inflamed skin. This is particularly beneficial for babies, who often experience skin irritation from diaper rash, eczema, or other minor skin conditions.
Lavender has natural antimicrobial and antiseptic properties, which help protect the skin from infections. It helps in preventing the growth of harmful bacteria and aids in the healing process.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Balm was smooth when I received it, but over time it has become gritty. Why does this happen and Is it still okay to use?
Your Baby & Mom Balm contains East African Shea butter, which is known for its high quality and nourishing properties. However, because this shea butter is not ultra-refined, it is more sensitive to temperature changes during storage or handling. When the balm is exposed to varying temperatures, particularly when it melts and then re-solidifies, the fat crystals in the shea butter can re-form unevenly, leading to a gritty texture.
Here are some specific reasons this can happen:
1. Melting and Re-solidifying: If the balm melts (e.g., in a warm environment) and then cools down slowly, large crystals can form, causing the gritty texture.
2. Incorrect Storage: Storing the balm in a place where the temperature fluctuates frequently can contribute to this issue. It’s best to store the balm in a cool, consistent environment.
3. High-Quality, Unrefined Ingredients: The use of very high-quality East African Shea butter that is not ultra-refined means the fats haven’t undergone processing to stabilize them, making the balm more prone to grittiness.
How to Fix It:
You can remelt the Baby & Mom Balm and cool it down quickly to help avoid grittiness. Here's how:
Melting Baby & Mom Balm in a Glass Container
1. Prepare a Pot: Fill a pot with 1-2 inches of water, just enough so that when you place the glass container in the pot, the water reaches about halfway up the side of the container.
2. Heat the Water: Place the pot on the stove and heat the water over medium-low heat until it simmers gently. You don’t want the water to boil vigorously, as this could cause the glass to overheat or crack.
3. Place the Glass Container in the Pot: Carefully place the glass container with the Baby & Mom Balm into the simmering water. Ensure that no water gets into the container.
4. Melt the Balm: Let the balm slowly melt in the glass container, stirring occasionally to ensure even melting. Keep a close eye on the water level, adding more if necessary to maintain the water level.
5. Cool the Balm: Once melted, carefully remove the glass container from the pot and let it cool rapidly in the refrigerator to avoid the formation of large crystals.
This method allows you to melt the Baby & Mom Balm without transferring it to another container, minimizing the risk of contamination and making cleanup easier.
Should this balm be cleaned off the nipple prior to nursing?
For babies under one year, we recommend removing the balm from nipples prior to nursing due to the presence of beeswax. This is left to the mom's preference, but something we like to mention.
How long does this balm last for?
The shelf life of this product is about 6-9 months. There are no preservatives in it, so it is important that it is stored properly and absolutely no double-dipping occurs when applying it to Baby's bottom.
Can I use this for baby eczema?
Yes! But keep in mind, eczema can flare up and be caused by many external factors, like washing baby clothes with harsh detergents, applying products with harsh ingredients as a lotion or in the bath, other skin irritants, and dietary factors. So although we recommend applying this product on any irritated skin, identifying the primary source of the irritation is important.
Can this be used on baby acne?
Yes, but baby acne - also known as neonatal acne - can be caused by many factors, including maternal hormones, immature pores, irritation from fabrics and detergents, overactive sebaceous glands, contact with saliva and spit-up, baby products with fragrances, etc. With this in mind, try to identify the primary source of the acne and limit exposure to any irritants.
What does it smell like?
This product has no fragrances or essential oils, but it does have a very mild herbal scent. Chamomile, calendula, and a small amount of lavender do come through. It's a very light, pleasant smell!
Can this be used as a perineal massage salve?
Yes! This product was specifically formulated for tender skin and sensitive parts of the body. It's super lightweight and so nourishing.
Can I use this even if I'm not a mom or my kids are grown?
100%! It's a great multi-purpose, herb-heavy salve! It was just created with baby skin and super-sensitive areas in mind. If you have really sensitive skin or struggle with rosacea, eczema, or flareups, I definitely recommend having this product as part of your skincare routine.
